IF hitched the second

Here we witness the sad moment when Dick Whittington’s cat lost all respect for him as they tried to hitch back to London.  Maybe he resented being taken back and forth across country on the whim of his master hearing a bell talk to him!

this is a hand cut paper illustration for the Illustration Friday topic hitched and i’m cheating slightly as i happened to make two, here’s the first.

Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be any historical basis for the real Richard Whittington having a cat or of him hearing Bow Bells ringing out to him, and he certainly wasn’t a poor orphan. Sometimes real life doesn’t stand up too well to legend.

IF hitched

Poor bears, they’ve chosen the worst place to hitchhike from, they’ll never catch a 4000 mile lift from piccadilly circus.  At least they’re only paper – i suppose they could travel airmail.

This is for the Illustration Friday topic hitched.  There’s a detail or two below, and an alternative hitched here.

Before the “ink” of my digital camera was even dry, i’ve thought of things i would do differently on this.  I think if the piccadilly sights were miniaturised the whole thing could crowd together into a happier, more even, composition.  The contrast in size between the architecture peices and the small cars and characters means it’s ended up looking a little gappy.

As i was working on it I amended and redrew the composition a few times.  One of the changes I made was to cut the tourists I had originally planned to have standing about.  It was unnecessary “noise” and confused things too much.  Now i have a few homeles little paper people knocking around.  I’ll store them for another day.

a swamp in a lantern

I’ve been thinking for a while about what to do with the 3d illustrations after I’ve finished taking pictures of them.

The larger ones head straight for the recycling, but the little ones are very solid and don’t take up too much house space.  They just need something to keep the dust off them, as I doubt paper enjoys being dusted regularly.  I looked at “official” display cases for model cars and similar, but they were very shiny and gitzy looking, a little too bling for a bit of matt paper, so I bought myself an old fashioned looking glass and metal lantern as an experiment to put the little swamp monster guy in:

I think this suits him quite well and I’ll be keeping my eye on ebay and my local second hand shops for more lanterns and boxes to house the rest of them.  Any other ideas let me know…

IF Puzzled

Here’s “foxed” my piece for this week’s Illustration Friday topic “Puzzled”.  How does she do that?

It’s line drawing on semi transparent paper over a collage.  In a crazed break (well, ok not crazy, but I’m trying to sound rock n roll!) with tradition I scanned the two pieces separately and put them together digitally.  I worry sometimes that the colours get a little lost when I scan or photograph the whole thing as a piece.  The colours are meant to be muted that’s why I use the overlaid paper, but not too fuzzy.

I think this seems to have worked pretty well, it looks fresher. I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts on it?

Here’s a snap of the whole thing as a piece for comparison:

And of the line drawing on its own

Happy Rabbit Day Illustration Rally

Rabbits are dancing all over the place, it must be spring.  Happy easter bank holiday everyone, hope you’ve all had a great weekend.

Up above are dancing rabbits as a 3D paper construction and down below are some 2D dancing rabbits (line drawing on semi transparency over collage).

IF swamp

A quick snap of my swamp monster for this week’s Illustration Friday project “Swamp”

I don’t think he’s terribly scary.  I imagine he’s only walking like that ’cause he’s trying to remember where he left his glasses!

He’s a paper construction, cut from cartridge paper with a scalpel.

wolves

Wolves illustration – hand cut cartridge paper and tracing paper

I’ve been reading a novel that features a wolf recently.  It made me think that I must be overdue to pluck out Angela Carter’s “Bloody Chamber” again to read The Company of Wolves and it led to my head being filled with wolves and werewolves of all kinds.

This illustration is an experiment to test an idea I suppose.  If I were to rework it I would tighten the whole thing up and probably work smaller.  Each of the paper pieces was rather larger than I would usually want to make and it led to the composition going a little awry.  Because of this I chose the composition for the final image above by photographing a section of the whole “set” that I had made. Here are some other bits of the set below

Return of the 3d – adrift

This is about when a freelance job is being difficult while you’re trying to find your way through it.  My partner works as a TV editor and a few days ago he described this sensation as being “adrift on a sea of television”   I thought that was a lovely summary so I set out to illustrate it.

Since my camera shuffled off its mortal coil I had been unable to photograph any 3D work without borrowing equipment from all over. I’ve now got my own digital camera again and it’s a relief to be making paper constructions again.  It’s so much fun and very satisfying – one of my favourite things to do.

Here’s a couple of alternate lighting views and a detail of the little fella and his huge tv monitor in the rowing boat. This is made of white cartridge paper cut with a scalpel.

IF Prepare

After an unseasonably warm winter so far, the frost is here and the wind is starting to bite.  I reckon it’s time to start preparing for winter.

I’ve got my plants ready for it, extra food is going out for the winter birds visiting and, even better, I have a beautiful new coat to keep out the chill.   Here’s a wintry woman to remind me to prepare for the coming cold and snow.  I wonder if she knows where I left those grey leg warmers…

Grounded v2

Here’s a quick alternative version of the Grounded feet for Illustration Friday in my previous post

Paint on acetate with collage.

IF Grounded

This week’s Illustration Friday topic is grounded.

Here I am literally grounded.  Like most people, getting my feet into the grass, sand, sea or escaping into the forest make me feel reconnected to the world and myself.  This is collage with overlayed line drawing.

I’ve done a paint on acetate version too, here’s a link to it

And here’s a little sketchbook too.  Some of the foot drawings:

IF highlight

Hello again Illustration Friday.  It’s been far too long.

This week’s topic is “Highlight”.  As nature abhors a vacuum, so something in me hates to see a gap that could be filled with a pun!  So my high light, is.  I love old industrial lamps and the personalities they all seem to have. This illustration is collage with a line drawing.

There’s a couple of other versions below, a pencil and ink drawing, and my more usual collage with a translucent overlay.

secret’s out

Now all the postcards are sold to raise money for the Fine Art Student Award Fund, RCA Secret  has owned up to who’s who. So we can all confess.  And I promise I will stop going on about Secret for a bit!   Funny to think someone out there owns the originals of these now, if they sold of course.  If you have one I hope you enjoy it.

Mr Rabbit is ink line drawing and collage as is my engine, below.

This is the odd one out, line drawing and painting:

RCA Secret product photos

Here are the finished products sporting my illustration for RCA Secret’s 18th birthday show.  If you don’t know it, the exhibition is of 2,900 postcard sized artworks at the Royal College of Art, signed only on the reverse, so on sale day collectors buy a work and only discover who it’s by after they’ve purchased it.  It’s a fantastic show to see.  The postcards are displayed in 10 x 10 grids, the individual works are lovely and en masse they make a beautiful whole.

RCA Secret

Phew, I can finally talk about it!  Here’s a screen grab from the RCA Secret website:

For the first time ever RCA Secret are selling a range of merchandise to celebrate their eighteenth birthday.  I was lucky enough to do the illustration for the T-shirts, badges, pens and pads.  Like the postcards in the show, all the proceeds go to student funds.  I love this show!  thousands of gorgeous little A6 pieces of work lining the walls of the gallery.

Here’s the illustration I made:

I’d been asked to use the photos of the show in the gallery from previous years for reference hence the gallery image.  I’ll update this over the weekend with sketchbook and some photos of the finished products.

IF Silent

Two doodles this week for Illustration Friday

Silent. What else but a giraffe playing charades?  Someone once told me that giraffes are silent.  Mute.  I’ve since found out that this isn’t true, but it seems it’s a fairly widespread belief.  I used to enjoy visiting the giraffe house at my local zoo when i was a child, when they did seem silent brushing back and forth between their paddock and the warm, hay smelling hush of their inside quarters.

I figured if they are silent then I bet they’re demons at charades.  No temptation to speak, they’d be master mimes!   I have a toy giraffe who rejoices in the name of Godfrey and sits around on a shelf in my house so he started out as my muse.  there’s some sketchbook down the bottom of this.

Another thing that floated into my brain was “silent as the grave”.   I imagined the Count lying back in his coffin for a day’s rest, keeping the grave silent by using headphones while he rocks out.

Both of these are ink line drawing with collage.  There’s things i’d change if they were going to be “finished” drawings, and there’s something decidedly unnerving about Godfrey getting his mime on. but they’ve raised a smile for me.  and how often do you get to say “i’m in a rush, sorry about the paper everywhere and there’s a vampire in the scanner”

Business blue tits

Business cards were the order of the day around working yesterday.  Here’s the finished design for the front face of them:

I’m already thinking about changes i’ll make for the next set!  I’d imagine the bird and corner may need to be drawn with a heavier line or they might disappear although i really want it to be as subtle as possible, so I’ll see how they look when they’re printed.  A greater contrast between the grey colour and the bright colour might be good.  A darker, cooler grey would help i think.

I started out with a drawing from a shirt i’d made.  Here he is, he was just hand painted so he’s looking a little battered a couple of years on.

Here’s mr blue tit as a sketch from the shirt and some claw images i copied, as i was never happy with how i had painted them on the shirt.  in the end i used the open claws (bottom left of claw drawings) and worked from those to imagine how they might act when gripping a thread.

Here’s the two elements combined.  I was toying with two ideas for the thread, either he’s pulling open the edge of the card or it leads onto the other side to spell out my name.  I liked the idea of a bright corner being revealed, so that’s where i landed.

IF Stripes

“Stripes” for Illustration Friday              This is a cartridge paper construction I made as a sort of little film set that I lit for optimum stripiness.  Like the tv and tree narrative further down my blog, I wanted to keep it looking papery and matte.

IF Scattered

I’ve been so busy with work and various projects that I’ve missed out on my Illustration Friday time and it’s nearly the end of the week!   This week’s theme was Scattered so here’s a quick doodle of scattered seeds on soil put together as a repeat pattern.

IF Contraption

Here’s the contraption that I live my life in, the body that carries me around.  I’m not sure it’s really biologically accurate.

There’s a Mirah song I’m very fond of called ‘Engine Heart’.  I’ve wilfully taken her entirely literally!  Although, saying that, here I have more of a pump heart.
